Can getting married help you get a green card?

On Behalf of | Jul 23, 2025 | US Immigration Law

A green card authorizes you to be a permanent resident of the United States. You’re not a full citizen, but this is a step up from simply living and working in the United States on a visa. If you have a green card, you don’t have to worry about satisfying visa requirements in the same specific ways.

One way to become a permanent resident is to get married. If you marry someone who is a citizen, then they can use their status to petition on your behalf. This increases the chances that the government will grant your green card and allow you to become a permanent resident so that you can live with your new spouse. This is especially important for those who are considering families and having children.

You may go through a green card marriage interview

One step that you may need to take at this time is to go through a green card marriage interview. This isn’t a test that you can study for, like the citizenship test. Instead, it’s just a chance for the interviewer to determine if your marriage is legitimate or if you’re just using it as an excuse to get a green card.

They’ll often just ask you questions about your daily life. What do the two of you do for fun? Where did you go on your first date? What are your plans for the future? What are your roles or responsibilities in the home? When did you meet each other’s extended families? The interviewer is likely just looking for consistency in your story.

As you go through this process, it’s very important to understand all of your legal options, as getting a green card can have a major impact on your future.
